Everything at Matheson’s Plantation changed the day Willa came. The once orderly and systematically operated plantation started its transformation that day in early October. No one had even the slightest idea Willa was bringing with her a very potent yet clandestine source of power, so potent in fact, that sometimes she didn’t recognize its strength.
To have freedom then lose it at the hands of deceit is too much for Willa to accept. Once an African queen reigning over her people, Willa has now been thrust into a world of unthinkable harshness. Matheson’s Children is the story of one slave girl’s quest to regain humanity and control in a land that is strange and bewildering. Brought by the wealthy plantation owner Benjamin Matheson, Willa masterminds a plan with the help of voodoo that will take her from being slave, house servant, and bed wench to controller of Matheson Plantation.
Aunt Agnes has worked for the Matheson’s for many years. Now in her senior years she is about to be granted freedom. Willa is brought on board to replace her. Ma Tressie and her daughter, Liza Jane are devoted slaves who run the house and kitchen. Ma Tressie feels threaten by the introduction of Willa as the personal maid to the ‘pregnant’ Mistress Benjamin. Ma Tressie also senses a peculiarity about Willa that leaves her uneasy. She thinks Willa is trying to steal the strong, strapping yard slave, Ezekiel from her. However, Ezekiel is in love with Liza Jane and vice-versa. The lovebirds keep the secret of their affections to themselves but solicit Willa to act as proxy to help them steal rationed time together.
Willa practices voodoo and used her famous teas laced with spider legs, snake blood and other macabre ingredients to caste spells on her masters. Under her spells, Mistress Benjamin has taken her to be a dear friend rather a slave and Master Benjamin has taken her as his lover. Willa has shed the duties of a house slave and is treated like a boss by the other slaves. It is her plan to have the Mistress Benjamin die in childbirth and gain the love of Master Benjamin, thus making her mistress of the plantation. Willa’s plans fail when Mistress Benjamin survives childbirth but produces a hideously deformed baby. Aunt Agnes is given the child to raise.
